About Providence Church of Texas
What Does the Providence Church Logo Represent?
“Providence” speaks of God’s care and control of the world for the benefit of His children. It is not luck, but God actively in charge. Seemingly random events are woven into a story He is telling as He reveals His glory to His creation.
“Church” describes a community of like-minded baptized believers in the triune God, united in the Lord Jesus Christ. We are brothers and sisters working together to do the Father’s will as we seek to glorify Him by having a positive impact on the world.
The text “providence church” at the foot of the cross reminds us of our subordination to Christ as head of the church. We are here to serve Him, to be His hands and His feet in the world, carrying out His will.
The cross reminds us of the only means of redemption: saved from God’s wrath as sinners by the price Jesus paid. He died so we might live. He paid a debt He did not owe because we owed a debt we could not pay. The cross reminds us of God’s great love for sinners. The cross is empty, reminding us we serve a risen Savior. Christ’s resurrection proclaims God’s demands have been satisfied.
The ring of “solas” surrounds the church, serving as boundaries we dare not cross as we seek to do God’s work God’s way for God’s glory.
The solas are central ideas of our Protestant identity reminding us of the church’s need to always be reforming (Semper Reformanda).
What Are the Five Solas?
- Soli Deo Gloria
- To God alone be the glory. Our chief purpose as created people is to glorify God.
- Sola Scriptura
- Scripture alone is our governing authority.
- Sola Gratia
- It is the grace of God alone that delivers us from our bondage to sin.
- Sola Fide
- We are saved by grace through faith alone.
- Solus Christus
- We are saved only by grace through faith alone because of Christ alone.
What Is the Mission of Providence Church?
“To glorify God by making disciples who love God and others.”
Why Is Providence Church Both Reformed and Southern Baptist?
What does Reformed mean?
First, it does not mean we have “arrived.” We are not perfect, as individuals or as a church, but we pursue them through reliance on the Holy Spirit. In fact, part of being a reformed church involves the recognition that it is always in process. Or, as was said centuries ago, ecclesia reformata semper reformanda est (“The reformed church is always reforming”). Being “reformed” means an adherence to and advancement of the theological principles of the Protestant Reformation. Our theological framework could also be termed Calvinistic or Augustinian.
What does Southern Baptist mean?
It means that while we are an autonomous body, we voluntarily associate with other baptists for the purpose of cooperating in missions and other ministries. At the national level we are aligned with the Southern Baptist Convention. At the state level, we are uniquely aligned with the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention.
What Organizations Is Providence Church Affiliated With?
