Apart from Me

Reflect and pray

Jesus later summed up the lesson of Matthew 17 in one devastating sentence: 'Apart from me you can do nothing.' Not 'apart from me you can do very little.' Nothing. The disciples had authority, training, experience, and commission. Yet apart from conscious dependence on Christ, all of it amounted to nothing in the moment that mattered. This is the hidden danger of competence. We can become so good at serving God that we forget we still need Him.

The image of the vine and branches is not decorative. A branch does not need to try harder to produce fruit. It needs to stay connected. The sap flows or it does not. The fruit appears or it does not. The branch's only job is to remain. Our modern instincts rebel against this. We want strategies, metrics, and action steps. Jesus offers abiding. Abiding is not passive; it is a sustained posture of dependence. It is waking up and choosing to lean on Him before we lean on our own understanding. It is checking our motives before we check our schedules.

If you are exhausted today, it may be because you have been trying to bear fruit by effort rather than by connection. The Father is not impressed by branches that rattle with activity while the sap has stopped flowing. He is looking for fruit that comes from life—His life in you. Rest is not laziness when it is rooted in trust. Let your work today flow from prayer, not around it. Let your confidence rest in the Vine, not in your own branch-strength.
