You Must Be Born Again

Nicodemus came to Jesus at night — a religious leader, a man who knew the Scriptures, a man who had spent his life trying to be good. And Jesus told him the one thing he didn't want to hear: 'Unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.'

All of Nicodemus's effort, all of his rule-keeping, all of his religious pedigree — none of it was enough. He needed something he couldn't produce on his own. He needed a new birth. A new nature. A new heart.

The same is true for us. We can't behavior-modify our way into the kingdom. We can't clean ourselves up enough to be acceptable to God. We need a miracle. We need to be born again.

This is the great mercy of the gospel: God doesn't just call us to try harder. He offers to make us new. Through faith in Christ, we receive a new identity, a new standing, a new power. The Spirit of God takes up residence in us and begins the work of transformation from the inside out.

This isn't a one-time event that solves all our problems. It's the beginning of a lifelong process. Sanctification is slow, messy, and often painful. But it's real. And it's the only hope any of us have.

You can't save yourself. You can't fix yourself. But God can. And He will — if you'll come to Him in faith, confess your need, and trust in the finished work of Jesus.

That's where new life begins.
