The Lord Upholds the Falling

Friday · Anchor: Ps.145.14· preview (not yet released by the daily cron)

From the sermon The Doctrine of God

The Lord upholds all who are falling and raises up all who are bowed down. This is covenant faithfulness. This is what God does for His people.

Notice the shift in the psalm. The first thirteen verses are broad, global, sweeping. But starting in verse 14, David gets specific. He gets personal. He starts talking about 'who' — who are falling, who are bowed down, who call on Him, who fear Him, who love Him. And the answer is: you. If you are in Christ, these verses are about you.

The Lord upholds you. He raises you up. He is near you. He hears your cries. He saves you. He preserves you. He keeps you. You are not going anywhere. No one can snatch you out of His hand.

This is the kindness of covenant faithfulness. Even when we stray, even when we sin, even when we are faithless — He remains faithful. Paul says it plainly in 2 Timothy 2: 'If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.' God's faithfulness is not dependent on our performance. It is rooted in His character. He keeps His promises because He is a promise-keeping God.

So if you are falling today, know this: the Lord upholds you. If you are bowed down under the weight of guilt or grief or fear, know this: the Lord raises you up. If you feel distant from God, know this: He is near to all who call on Him in truth.

But the psalm ends with a warning. While God preserves the saints, it is not the same for the wicked. The way of the wicked will perish. God's covenant faithfulness cuts two ways: salvation for those who call on Him, destruction for those who reject Him. So the question is: which side are you on?

Pause and consider

Are you falling or bowed down in some area of your life? How does the promise that the Lord upholds and raises you speak to that place today?

Prayer

Father, thank You that You uphold me when I am falling and raise me up when I am bowed down. I am not strong enough to stand on my own, but You are faithful. Keep me, Lord. Hold me. Do not let me go. Amen.
