An Anchor for the Soul
Thursday · Anchor: Ps.145.13· preview (not yet released by the daily cron)
From the sermon The Doctrine of God
Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and Your dominion endures throughout all generations. Four times in three verses, David emphasizes the kingdom of God. And the reason is simple: what makes the kingdom praiseworthy is the King who rules it.
God's kingdom is glorious because God is glorious. God's kingdom is eternal because God is eternal. And here is the comfort for the people of God: there is not one second of time — past, present, or future — when God is not sovereign over all.
This is not abstract theology. This is an anchor for the soul. When your life feels out of control, God is still sovereign. When the diagnosis comes, when the job is lost, when the relationship fractures, when the world seems to be unraveling — God is still on the throne. He has not been caught off guard. He is not scrambling to adjust His plans. He is sovereign, and His sovereignty is good.
Arthur Pink wrote that nothing in all the vast universe can come to pass otherwise than God has eternally purposed. That is a foundation for faith. That is a resting place for the intellect. That is an anchor for the soul.
So what does this mean practically? It means your trials are not random. It means your suffering is not meaningless. It means your future is not uncertain. God is sovereign over all of it, and He is working all things together for the good of those who love Him.
This does not mean we will understand everything. It does not mean we will not grieve or struggle or question. But it does mean we are not alone, and we are not adrift. We are held by a sovereign God who loves us, who is faithful, and who will not let us go.
Pause and consider
What area of your life feels out of control right now? How does the sovereignty of God speak into that place?
Prayer
Lord, You are sovereign over all things. When my life feels chaotic, remind me that You are still on the throne. Anchor my soul in the truth that You are working all things for my good and Your glory. Help me to trust You even when I cannot see the way forward. Amen.
