From the sermon The Doctrine of God
Opening: Read Psalm 145 Together
I will extol you, my God and King, and bless your name forever and ever. Every day I will bless you and praise your name forever and ever. Great is the LORD and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable. (Psalm 145:1–3, ESV)
David wrote this psalm as a song of praise, listing reason after reason why God is worthy of our worship. Today we'll dig into what makes God praiseworthy — and how all of it points us to Jesus.
Question 1: Unsearchable Greatness
Read Psalm 145:3 and Isaiah 40:28 again.
Great is the LORD and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable.
Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. (Isaiah 40:28, ESV)
What does it mean that God's greatness is 'unsearchable'? How does knowing we can never fully understand God affect the way we approach Him in worship or prayer?
Question 2: Mighty Works Worth Telling
Read Psalm 145:4–6.
One generation shall commend your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts. On the glorious splendor of your majesty, and on your wondrous works, I will meditate. They shall speak of the might of your awesome deeds, and I will declare your greatness.
The sermon said the church is built on 'the faithful proclamation of the gospel truth from one generation to the next,' not on programs or emotional experiences. What is one specific 'mighty work' of God (from the Bible or your own life) that you could tell someone about this week?
Question 3: The Goodness of God
Read Psalm 145:8–9 and Romans 2:4.
The LORD is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. The LORD is good to all, and his mercy is over all that he has made. (Psalm 145:8–9, ESV)
Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? (Romans 2:4, ESV)
The sermon explained that God's goodness extends to everyone (common grace), but only the redeemed respond with thanksgiving. Why do you think people who experience God's kindness every day (food, breath, beauty) often don't thank Him? What would change if we truly grasped how good God is?
Question 4: God's Sovereign Rule
Read Psalm 145:13 and Romans 8:38–39.
Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures throughout all generations. (Psalm 145:13, ESV)
For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:38–39, ESV)
How does believing that God is in control — that His kingdom is everlasting and nothing can separate us from His love — change the way you face hard circumstances or uncertainty?
Question 5: Covenant Faithfulness
Read Psalm 145:13b–14 and 2 Corinthians 1:20.
The LORD is faithful in all his words and kind in all his works. The LORD upholds all who are falling and raises up all who are bowed down. (Psalm 145:13b–14, ESV)
For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory. (2 Corinthians 1:20, ESV)
The sermon said that every promise of God finds its 'yes' in Jesus. What is one promise from Scripture that you need to hold onto right now — and how does Jesus fulfill that promise?
Debate & Discussion: Obedience as Joy or Duty?
The sermon said: 'When we see God as He truly is, obedience becomes not a burden, but a joy.'
Discuss or debate: Is obedience to God primarily motivated by love and joy, or by duty and discipline? Can it be both? Share examples from your own walk with God. How does meditating on God's greatness, goodness, and faithfulness fuel your desire to obey Him?
Closing Reflection
Read Psalm 145:21 as a group.
My mouth will speak the praise of the LORD, and let all flesh bless his holy name forever and ever.
Write down one attribute of God from today (greatness, mighty works, goodness, sovereignty, faithfulness) that you want to praise Him for this week. How will you 'commend His works to another generation'?
