What Did the People at Babel Want?

Read Genesis 11:1-9 together. The people said, 'Let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves.'

What were they trying to do? Why do you think God was not happy with their plan?

Two Kinds of Moving

The sermon said there are two types of migration in all of human history: migrating away from God and migrating towards God.

At Babel, people moved away from God by being proud and wanting to make their own name famous. At Pentecost (Acts 2), God brought people from every nation together to hear about Jesus.

Which direction are you moving? Draw a picture of yourself either walking toward God or away from God.

The Language of the Gospel

At Babel, God confused everyone's language so they could not understand each other. At Pentecost, people from every nation heard the good news about Jesus in their own language!

The sermon said the gospel is like a special language that brings people together. What is the good news about Jesus that everyone needs to hear?

Act It Out!

With your group, act out the story of Babel. Have some kids pretend to build a tower and say, 'Let us make a name for ourselves!' Then have another person be God and say, 'Come, let us go down and confuse their language.' Everyone start speaking pretend languages and walk away in different directions.

Then act out Pentecost: gather back together and say, 'Jesus saves!' in different silly voices — but this time everyone understands and cheers together!
