The One That Wandered

From the sermon Loving Process of Restoration
What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray?
This is not how we think. We think in terms of efficiency, of cost-benefit analysis. Ninety-nine safe, one lost? Cut your losses. Move on. But God doesn't operate that way.
The shepherd leaves the ninety-nine — not because they don't matter, but because the one matters just as much. The wandering sheep hasn't been written off. It hasn't been replaced. It's still His, and He will go after it.
Maybe you're the one who wandered. You believed once, but somewhere along the way you drifted. Sin looked appealing. Obedience felt hard. You told yourself it didn't matter, that God had plenty of other sheep, that you were just one among many. But here's the truth: He's looking for you. Not with anger, but with intention. Not to scold, but to restore.
Or maybe you're one of the ninety-nine, and you've watched someone wander off. It's easy to feel self-righteous, to think, 'Well, I didn't stray.' But the shepherd's heart is for the one who's lost. And if that's His heart, shouldn't it be ours too?
God doesn't give up on His own. He doesn't shrug and move on. He seeks. He pursues. He finds. And when He does, there's more joy over that one than over all the others who never wandered. Not because the ninety-nine don't matter, but because restoration is a miracle worth celebrating.
Pause and consider
Have you wandered? Or do you know someone who has? What would it look like to trust that God is still seeking — and to join Him in that work?
Prayer
Good Shepherd, thank You that You do not abandon the wandering. Thank You that my value to You is not determined by my performance or my track record. Seek me when I stray. Give me a heart like Yours for those who have drifted. Bring us all back to the fold.
