Agreement in His Name

Reflect and pray

We've all heard Matthew 18:19 quoted in prayer meetings: *If two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven.* And we've probably all wondered why it doesn't seem to work the way we think it should. We agree, we ask, and… nothing.

But look at the context. Jesus isn't giving us a formula for getting whatever we want. He's talking about the church's work of restoration. When two or three believers come together in the process of pursuing a wandering brother or sister — when they agree in prayer that God would bring that person to repentance — God hears. God acts. God restores.

The Greek word for 'agree' here is *symphōneō* — the root of our word 'symphony.' It's not just intellectual agreement; it's harmony, voices blending together in pursuit of the same goal. And the goal isn't our comfort or convenience. It's God's glory and the good of His people.

This is a promise about God's faithfulness to His own process. When we do things His way — when we pursue the lost, confront sin gently and firmly, and pray in unity for restoration — He shows up. He authenticates our work. He brings the wanderer home.

So yes, this verse is about prayer. But it's not about getting God to do what we want. It's about aligning ourselves with what He already wants: the repentance and restoration of His beloved sheep. When we pray in harmony with His will, we can be confident He will act.
