The Debt You Didn't Pay

Here's the staggering truth at the heart of the gospel: 'For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God' (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Jesus took on a debt He didn't owe. He bore a punishment He didn't deserve. He paid a price He had no obligation to pay. And He did it so that you could be forgiven.

When you think about unlimited forgiveness — seventy-seven times, or seventy times seven — it's easy to feel overwhelmed. How can I possibly forgive that much? How can I keep extending grace when I've been wronged again and again?

The answer is this: You've been forgiven more.

You didn't just sin against God seven times. Or seventy-seven times. You sinned against Him in ways you can't even count. And yet, in Christ, every single one of those sins has been paid for. Covered. Removed as far as the east is from the west.

God doesn't keep a ledger. He doesn't tally up your offenses and wait for you to hit a limit. He forgives freely, fully, and forever — because of Jesus.

And now He calls you to do the same. Not because it's easy. Not because the people who wrong you deserve it. But because you've been forgiven a debt you could never pay.

When you're tempted to withhold forgiveness, remember the cross. Remember what it cost for you to be forgiven. And let that reality reshape how you respond to others.
