As Much As It Depends on You

From the sermon Unlimited Forgiveness?

Romans 12:18 is one of those verses that offers both freedom and responsibility: 'If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.'

Paul knows something important — sometimes peace isn't possible. Sometimes the other person won't meet you halfway. Sometimes you extend forgiveness and it's rejected. Sometimes you try to reconcile and the door stays shut.

And Paul says, 'That's okay. Do your part. Live peaceably *as far as it depends on you*.'

This is freeing because it means you're not responsible for outcomes you can't control. You can't force someone to forgive you. You can't make someone accept your apology. You can't compel reconciliation.

But you are responsible for your own heart. Your own actions. Your own willingness to forgive, to seek peace, to let go of bitterness.

So if you've done what you can — if you've gone to the person, if you've confessed your part, if you've extended forgiveness — and the relationship is still broken, you can rest. You've done what depends on you.

But here's the harder question: Have you actually done what depends on you? Or are you holding back because it's awkward, or because you're waiting for the other person to make the first move, or because you're nursing a grudge?

Living peaceably doesn't mean being a doormat. It doesn't mean pretending everything is fine when it's not. But it does mean taking responsibility for your own heart and your own actions, regardless of how the other person responds.

Pause and consider

Is there a relationship where you've been waiting for the other person to make the first move? What is one thing that 'depends on you' that you could do this week to pursue peace?

Prayer

God, help me to take responsibility for my own heart. Show me where I've been holding back, where I've been waiting for someone else to act first. Give me the courage to do what depends on me, and the grace to release what doesn't. Amen.
