From the sermon Unlimited Forgiveness?
Start Here
Then Peter came up and said to him, 'Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?' Jesus said to him, 'I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times.' (Matthew 18:21-22)
Peter thought seven times sounded like a lot of forgiveness. Jesus basically said, 'Stop counting!' This week we're learning that Christians forgive over and over — because God has forgiven us over and over.
Question 1: When Is It Hardest?
Think about a time when someone hurt your feelings or did something mean to you. Was it harder to forgive them the first time, or if they did it again? Why do you think Jesus tells us to keep forgiving even when someone keeps messing up?
Question 2: The Forgiveness Ledger
Imagine you kept a notebook where you wrote down every time you forgave someone — like keeping score. What would happen to your friendships if you did that? How does keeping 'no record of wrongdoing' (1 Corinthians 13:5) change the way we treat people?
Question 3: Where Does Forgiveness Come From?
The sermon said that forgiving people doesn't come naturally to us — it comes from God's Spirit working in us. When you're really angry at someone, how can you ask God to help you forgive? What might that prayer sound like?
Question 4: Forgiveness in Your Life
Jesus connected forgiveness to restoring relationships (Matthew 18:15). Think of someone you need to forgive — maybe a brother, sister, or friend. What's one step you could take this week to show forgiveness and rebuild that friendship?
Question 5: Because God Forgave Us
Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. (Colossians 3:12-13)
God has forgiven you for way more than 77 things! How does remembering God's forgiveness make it easier to forgive others? Write down or draw one way God has forgiven you, and thank Him for it.
