Reflect and pray

The conversation about marriage in Matthew 19 does not drop out of the sky. It follows a hard conversation about forgiveness. Peter asked how many times he must forgive his brother, suggesting seven times. Jesus answered, 'Not seven times, but seventy times seven.' Then He walked straight into the teaching on marriage.

That sequence is not accidental. It is the secret engine that keeps a covenant running. If you do the math, even a single slight per day piles far higher than four hundred ninety over the course of a marriage. You will blow past that number in the first two years. If you are keeping a ledger, you will run out of paper and patience at roughly the same time.

Forgiveness in marriage is not a feeling. It is a decision to release your spouse from the debt they owe you, just as God released you from a debt you could never pay. Your husband's forgetfulness, your wife's sharp word, the recurring habit that drives you mad, these become the gymnasium where you practice the gospel. Every time you choose mercy over scorekeeping, you are declaring that grace is stronger than justice.

But unforgiveness is a poison you drink while hoping the other person dies. It hardens the heart, cools the affection, and turns a home into a courtroom. Jesus offers a better way. He offers His own Spirit, the One who forgave us ten thousand talents, to empower us to forgive the hundred denarii.

Who do you need to forgive today? Do not wait for an apology that may never come. Do not wait until you feel like it. Forgive as you have been forgiven, and watch the atmosphere of your home change. Grace is the only air marriage can breathe.
