What God Has Joined

Reflect and pray

When the Pharisees tested Jesus, He did not hand them a list of rules. He took them back to the garden. 'Have you not read?' He asked. And then He reminded them that marriage was never a human invention to be revised by human preference. From the beginning, the Creator made them male and female, and the two become one flesh. What God has joined together, let not man separate.

It is easy to forget that your marriage is not a contract you signed but a covenant God sealed. On the days when communication feels like a dead end and the list of grievances grows longer, the culture whispers that you have the right to rewrite the terms. But Jesus points past the certificate, past the courtroom, past the arguments, to a sovereign act of joining. God did the joining. That means the bond is bigger than your feelings, bigger than your frustrations, and bigger than your failures.

This is not meant to feel like a heavy chain. It is meant to be the strong frame that holds up the house. When you recognize that God is the third strand in your marriage, you stop trying to be the referee and start learning to be a partner. You are no longer two, but one flesh. That means his shame is your shame, her joy is your joy, and the future you face is shared because the God who joined you is faithful to sustain what He began.

So today, do not look for an exit. Look at your spouse and remember: this union was crafted in the mind of God before it was pronounced in front of friends. Ask Him to give you the grace to honor what He has built. Rest in the truth that the One who joined you is still holding you both.

Even if you are not married, this truth shapes how you view the covenants around you. You can pray for the marriages in your church with a new confidence, knowing they are held by a Gardener who does not abandon His soil. And if you are widowed or single again, you can trust that the God who once joined you does not discard His work. His faithfulness outlasts every season.
