The Pharisees thought they had Jesus cornered with Moses. If the law allowed a certificate of divorce, how could Jesus say otherwise? His answer cut straight to the heart: 'Because of your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.'

Hardness of heart is a quiet disease. It does not announce itself with shouting. It creeps in through small disappointments, unmet expectations, and quiet resentments that calcify over time. Before long, you are no longer looking for reasons to stay; you are looking for reasons to leave. You begin to treat your spouse as a problem to be solved rather than a person to be loved. And when the heart grows hard, the law becomes a tool for escape rather than a mirror for repentance.

Jesus does not leave us there. He calls us back to the beginning, to the soft soil of Eden where Adam held Eve not as a rival but as bone of his bones and flesh of his flesh. That softness is not naive. It is courageous. It takes more courage to forgive than to file papers. It takes more strength to stay and work through the mess than to walk away and start over.

Today, ask the Lord to show you where your heart has grown hard. Is there a grudge you have been polishing like a stone? Is there a wound you have refused to let Him heal? The grace of the gospel is that Jesus gives new hearts. He does not merely patch the old one; He replaces it. A soft heart does not mean you ignore sin or tolerate abuse, but it does mean you stop building walls and start building bridges. Ask Him for the tenderness that makes marriage possible. He will not refuse.

Remember, the same hardness that seeks a certificate can also seek a cold war at home. You may never file for divorce, yet live as though you are already single. Jesus invites you back to the beginning today. Let Him soften what has been stiffened by years of neglect. The beginning is still His design, and His design is still good.
