A Union God Never Joined

Jesus said, 'Whoever divorces his wife, except for porneia, and marries another, commits adultery.' For centuries, believers have wrestled with that exception clause, wondering how wide the door swings. But when we look carefully at the Scriptures, we see that Jesus is not offering a broad loophole for every painful situation. He is guarding the integrity of the covenant by pointing to unions that should never have been formed in the first place.

In the Levitical law, certain marriages were forbidden outright, unions that violated the created order. The apostle Paul uses porneia the same way when he rebukes the man who has his father's wife. That was not a marriage to be mended; it was a transgression to be ended. Jesus protects the holiness of marriage by saying that what God has not joined, man cannot claim.

For most of us, this does not create an escape hatch. It creates a boundary. It reminds us that we cannot build a marriage on any foundation we choose and then ask God to bless it. We must enter covenant the way He designed it: one man, one woman, for life, with Him at the center. If you are in a legitimate marriage, this word is not a threat; it is an anchor. It means your covenant is not fragile. It means the storms do not get to decide whether you stand or fall. God decides, and He has decided for permanence.

But this also calls us to examine the foundations we lay in every relationship. Are we honoring God's order, or are we rewriting it to suit our desires? The grace of Christ is that He receives repentant sinners, but His design does not bend to our preferences. Today, thank God for the boundaries that protect you. And if you are married, recommit yourself to the covenant as it stands, not as you might wish it to be. The narrow gate leads to life.
