God's Plan for Marriage

Young kids (7-8) · leader guide · Anchor: Matthew 19:1-12· preview

From the sermon The Divorce Test

Question 1: Why Does God Want Marriage to Last Forever? (5 min)

Read God's Word together:

The Pharisees asked, 'Is it lawful to divorce one's wife for any cause?' Jesus answered, 'Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female? Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.' (Matthew 19:3-6)

Ask: Why do you think God wants a husband and wife to stay together for their whole life?

Leader Notes - Expected answers: Because God is the one who puts them together; they make a special team; it is a promise; God does not want anyone to tear it apart. - Redirect: If a child shares personal family details, say — 'Thank you for sharing. That is important. Right now we are learning what Jesus taught about God's perfect plan. You can talk with me more about your story after class.' - Time: About 5 minutes. Keep answers brief and affirm every child.

Question 2: How Can We Soften a Hard Heart? (5 min)

Jesus said Moses allowed divorce because people had hard hearts. But from the beginning it was not so.

Ask: When someone hurts your feelings, what can you do instead of staying angry?

Leader Notes - Expected answers: Forgive them; say sorry; pray; ask God for help; be kind anyway. - Redirect: If the conversation turns to specific family arguments or divorce, say — 'It sounds like you know feelings can get hurt. Let's focus on what Jesus says helps a hard heart become soft again.' - Time: 5 minutes. Guide the group toward forgiveness.

Question 3: How Does Marriage Show Jesus' Love? (5 min)

The sermon said marriage is like a picture of Christ and the church. Jesus loves his people, forgives them, and never leaves.

Ask: What is one way a husband and wife can love each other like Jesus loves us?

Leader Notes - Expected answers: Forgive each other; help each other; be patient; love even when it is hard; keep promises. - Redirect: If children talk only about weddings or parties, say — 'Weddings are fun, but Jesus is talking about every-day love. What does that kind of love look like?' - Time: 5 minutes. Emphasize that forgiveness keeps love going.

Activity: Draw a Forgiveness Picture (10 min)

Give each child paper and crayons. Ask them to draw a picture of one way people can show love and forgiveness to each other. Remind them that the sermon said a happy marriage needs 'two good forgivers,' and that Jesus forgives us too.

Leader Notes - Expected results: Drawings of people hugging, saying sorry, helping each other, or a cross showing Jesus' love. - Redirect: If a child draws something unrelated, ask — 'Can you add a picture of someone forgiving another person? That shows what we learned today.' - Time: 10 minutes. Allow 1-2 minutes for volunteers to share.
