Let the Children Come

Leader Note: This guide is for ages 7–8. Keep things simple and encouraging. Total time: about 10–12 minutes.

Then children were brought to him, that he lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked the people, But Jesus said, 'Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for to such belong the Kingdom of heaven.' And he laid his hands on them, and went away. (Matthew 19:13-15)

Question 1: What did Jesus say about the children?

Ask: In our story, the disciples told people to stop bringing kids to Jesus. What did Jesus say instead?

Leader-only: Expected answer: Jesus said, 'Let the children come to me' and 'Do not hinder them.' He wanted the kids close. If a child says something off-topic like 'I have a dog,' redirect with: 'That is neat! Let us get back to Jesus and the children. What did He say to the disciples?'

Question 2: Why does Jesus want kids in His kingdom?

Ask: The sermon said grown-ups need to become more like children, not the other way around. What is one good thing about how kids trust their mom or dad?

Leader-only: Expected answer: Kids know they need help. They ask for food, clothes, and hugs. They trust their parents to take care of them. That is the kind of trust Jesus wants us to have in God. If off-topic: 'Good thinking. Let us talk about trust. How does a little kid ask mom for help when they are hungry?'

Time: 3 minutes

Question 3: How can we welcome kids like Jesus did?

Ask: Jesus showed that kids are important in God's family. What is one way we can help other kids—or yourself—feel welcome at church?

Leader-only: Expected answer: Say hello, invite them to sit with us, share supplies, or let them pray too. If off-topic: 'That is interesting. Now let us think about church. What is one kind thing we can do so a friend feels glad they came?'

Time: 2–3 minutes

Activity: Act It Out

Do: Pick one child to be Jesus. Pick a few to be disciples who say 'Go away!' Pick a few to be children walking toward Jesus. Have Jesus open His arms wide and say, 'Let the children come to me!' Then everyone gives a group hug or high-five.

Leader-only: Keep it gentle and fun. If a child does not want to act, let them be the director or make sound effects. Redirect wild energy by saying: 'Remember, Jesus was kind and calm. Let us show that gentle welcome.'
