Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good.
Scripture · Matt.19.16-17
And behold, a man came up to him, saying, 'Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?' And he said to him, 'Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you would enter life, keep the commandments.'
Reflect and pray
The young man approaches Jesus with confidence, certain that his own goodness will be enough. Yet Jesus immediately redirects the conversation away from human achievement to divine perfection. We too can assume our decent lives, our religious efforts, or our moral standing will satisfy God. But Jesus declares there is only one who is truly good. Take time today to examine where you look to your own goodness rather than to Christ's perfection. Pray that God would reveal any self-righteousness still hiding in your heart, and rest in the truth that only God's goodness can save.
