Jesus the Generous Employer

Question 1: What happened in the story?

Read the main passage together:

For the Kingdom of Heaven is like a master of a house who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. After agreeing with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard... And when those hired about the eleventh hour came, each of them received a denarius. (Matthew 20:1, 9)

Ask: What did the boss do that surprised everyone?

Expected answers: He gave the last workers the same pay as the first workers. / Everyone got one coin even though some worked all day and others only one hour.

Redirect: If a child talks about their own chores or a different story, say — That is good to notice, but let us look back at the vineyard. Who can tell me what happened when the boss paid everyone?

Time: 3 minutes

Question 2: Why were the first workers upset?

Ask: How did the early workers feel when they saw the late workers get the same pay?

Expected answers: They were mad or jealous. / They thought they should get more because they worked longer in the hot sun. / They compared themselves to the others.

Redirect: If a child goes off topic, say — Let us keep our thinking caps on the workers. Can you make a grumpy face like the first workers? Now tell me why they felt that way.

Time: 2 minutes

Question 3: What does the boss say about generosity?

Read the boss's answer:

Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius? Take what belongs to you and go. I choose to give to this last worker as I give to you. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me, or do you begrudge my generosity? (Matthew 20:13-15)

Ask: Was the boss breaking his promise, or was he being extra generous?

Expected answers: He kept his promise to the first workers. / He was being generous with his own money. / He wanted to give a good gift to the late workers too.

Redirect: If a child says the boss was unfair, say — That is a tricky part. The first workers did get the coin they were promised. God is the boss of His kingdom, and He loves to give good gifts that no one can earn.

Time: 3 minutes

Activity: Act Out the Vineyard

Have the kids stand in a line. Pick a few to be early workers, one or two to be late workers, and one to be the boss. Walk through the story: the boss calls them to work, they pretend to pick grapes, then the boss hands out the same pretend pay to everyone. Ask the early workers how they feel, then remind them what the boss said about generosity.

Leader tip: Keep it light and kind. If kids argue about who got more, use this redirect: Remember, in God's family we can be happy when others are blessed because God is generous to every person He calls.

Time: 5 minutes

Closing thought: Remind the kids that God always keeps His promises. We can serve Him faithfully and be content, knowing He gives grace to everyone who comes to Him.
