This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Zechariah saying say to the daughter of Zion, behold, your king is coming to you humble and mounted on a donkey on a colt the full of a beast of burden.

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
Reflect and pray
The Lord does not come as we might expect. Zechariah promised a king who would arrive humble and lowly, seated on a donkey rather than a war horse. This is Jesus: the sovereign who comes not in crushing power but in meekness, offering peace to his people. The crowds wanted a warrior; God sent a servant. Consider today whether you receive him on his terms or demand that he match your expectations. Pray that you would welcome your king as he is, not as you imagine him to be.
