Jesus Our Humble King

Children's church (3-6) · leader guide · Anchor: Matthew 21:1-11

From the sermon A Royal Prophet

Story Time

Long ago, Jesus rode into the city on a little donkey. The people shouted and waved branches because they were so happy. They wanted a strong king to fight for them. But Jesus came gently because He is the humble King who saves us.

Say to the daughter of Zion, 'Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey...'

— Matthew 21:5

Motion and Song

Prompt the children to hold their hands like reins and bounce gently, pretending to ride a donkey. Then have them wave their arms high and shout, 'Hosanna!' Remind them: Jesus is our humble King.

Yes/No Question

Ask: Did Jesus ride into Jerusalem on a big, strong horse? Expected answer: No.

Leader Notes

  • Delivery tone: Warm, enthusiastic, and calm—like a favorite bedtime story. Use big smiles and slow gestures.
  • Expected duration: 5 minutes.
  • Restless child: Invite them to be your donkey helper and bounce beside you, or give them a soft object to wave as a branch while you read. If they wander, gently guide them back by asking, 'Can you show me how a donkey goes?'
  • Redirect language: If a child answers the yes/no question incorrectly, say, 'No, Jesus rode on a little donkey. Donkeys are gentle, just like our humble King.'
